The old stand by, a 5/16 twisted wire on a 1/4 inch ring. Small enough to have feel but large enough not to create fear.

5/16 twisted wire old style dog-bone snaffle on a quarter inch ring. Distributes bar pressure over the tongue for a less aggressive feel.
